Karppinen Named Northland Sports Online Player of The Year

Northland Sports Online announces that Kolten Karppinen is the Northland Sports Online Player of the year for 2009-2010 basketball season. Karppinen was named to the 2008-2009 team and this season with his outstanding play throughout the year as well as in the Section 7A tournament made him the choice for player of the year.

Karppinen helped lead his AlBrook Falcons to their third ever Section 7A championship game where the Falcons fell to the Mesabi East Giants 75-66 in a contest that wasn’t decided till the last few seconds. In that section championship game he scored 26 points including seven three-pointers in the loss.

Karppinen finished his career with 1153 points for the Falcons. This season he averaged 21 points per game, 8.1 rebounds, 2 assists and one block per game. His leadership helped the Falcons finish the season 17-9 overall.

Karppinen, a senior guard for the Falcons always seemed to come up with the big shot when his team needed it most. His leadership and his scoring ability helped the Falcons improve by 12 wins this season over last year.

Karppinen also excelled in some post season all star games. In the Kernz and Company all-star game he scored 20 points to lead all scorers including six three-pointers. In the Coca-Cola all-star game at Mesabi Range College he added eleven points including three more three-pointers.

Northland Sports Online would like to congratulate Kolten on being named our Player of the year as his hard work and dedication to the AlBrook basketball program makes him very deserving of this award.

Jake Adams


Senior Guard - Carlton

Jake Adams senior guard for the Carlton Bulldogs was the go to player on the Bulldogs roster this season. Adams averaged 18.5 points per game for Carlton and was also named to the Polar league All Conference second team. This was based in a large part on his relentless hard work and hustle on the floor for the Bulldogs. Adams played in the Polar League all star game as well.

Josh Hogan


Junior Guard - Barnum

Josh Hogan junior guard for Barnum is named to the Northland Sports All-Area Team as one of the truly all around players, leading Barnum in several offensive categories. Hogan led the team in scoring with a 10.4 points per game average and in assists with an average of 4.5 per game. He also shot 76% from the free throw line. Hogan was also 1st team Polar League.

Jordan Smith


Senior Guard - Cromwell

Jordan Smith senior guard for the Cromwell Cardinals is named to the Northland Sports Online all-area team for the second time. Smith reached a career milestone scoring over 1000 points in his career. Smith averaged 14.5 points per game and added 4.5 assists per game for Cromwell. He also averaged 2 steals per game and was named 1st team all-conference.

Chad Calcaterra


Senior Center - Cloquet

Chad Calcaterra senior center for the Cloquet Lumberjacks again is chosen to the All-Area team, he was the Player of the Year in 2008-2009. Calcaterra found himself being double and triple teamed most of the season and also sustained a nagging ankle injury. Calcaterra still finished the season with an average of 18.4 points and 8.78 rebounds per game. He will play at Colorado State.

RaRa Jones


Senior Guard - Cloquet

RaRa Jones makes his first Northland Sports Online All-Area Team appearance. Jones had a breakout season for Cloquet averaging 14.8 points per game and 8.6 rebounds per game while also leading the Lumberjacks in steals with 50 on the season. Jones was named to the second team Lake Superior Conference. He will be playing football at St. Cloud State this fall.

Jake Stainbrook


Junior Forward - Esko

Jake Stainbrook junior forward for the Esko helped lead the Eskomos to an 18-10 overall record and a second place finish in the Polar League. Stainbrook led the Eskomos in scoring with an average of 14.8 points per game while shooting 46 % from the field. He was second on the Eskomos in rebounding with an average of 4.2 rebounds per game.

Adam Eskuri


Junior Guard - Esko

Adam Eskuri junior guard for Esko was the catalyst for the Eskomos offense running the point and directing the game plan. Eskuri was named to the first team all-conference along with teammate Jake Stainbrook. He finished the season averaging 13.1 points per game with 4 assists per game. He also led the Eskomos with a 34 % average from beyond the three-point line.

Caleb Koecher


Sophomore Forward ML/WR

Caleb Koecher sophomore forward for the Moose Lake-Willow River a two year starter for the Rebels makes his first appearance on the Northland Sports Online All Area team. Koecher was named to the second team all-conference for the Polar League. He led the Rebels in rebounding this season with an average of 6.7 per game and shot 68% from the free throw line.

Michael Swartz


Senior Guard - Hermantown

Michael Swartz senior guard for Hermantown helped led the Hawks to their best record in several seasons. The Hawks finished 13-13 overall with more wins this year than the last three season combined. Swartz finished with an average of 16.9 points per game, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals per game. He was also named to the Lake Superior Conference 1st team.

Aaron Gustafson


Senior Center - Wrenshall

Aaron Gustafson senior center from Wrenshall is named to his first All-Area team. He was a shining star on a team that struggled for wins this season. Gustafson averaged 12.5 points per game and 8.7 rebounds per game for Wrenshall.  He was also named to the Polar League honorable mention team. He played in the annual Polar League All-Star game in Barnum.

Trevor Nummela


Junior Guard - ML/WR

Trevor Nummela junior guard for the Rebels of Moose Lake-Willow River came into his own this season as Nummela played an important role helping the Rebels to their third straight conference title. Nummela was named to the first team all-conference for the Polar League and he finished with an average of 11.3 points per game, 3 assists per game, and shot 46% from the field.

Nick White


Senior Forward - Barnum

Nick White senior forward is also named to his first all area team this season where Nick was an important part of a Barnum Team that finished the season 24-5 overall and third in the Polar League Standings as well as a Section 5A semi-final participant. White averaged 9.6 points per game for the Bombers. He also led Barnum with 50 three-pointers on the season.
