  When I was a young boy growing up in the middle of Cloquet, I remember walking to the Cloquet Middle School (then the Junior High School), why the name change is beyond me, anyways walking to the school early just to find a place to sit to watch a basketball game. With names like Sprenger, and Rodd, Norgren, Kolodge, Krezinski, Isle, and many more taking on the likes of McHale, Ujdur, Retica and such, it was a packed house nearly each and every night.

While Superior, WI is just a bit out of our coverage area, I really feel the need to share the following story of sportsmanship displayed by the Superior Spartan football team.

  Over the past two weekends for you golf fans you have been treated to two of the best performances there are in golf. First Phil Mickelson winning the Masters with grace and elegance to become a three time Masters Champion, and on this past Sunday Brain Davis, who in a playoff with Jim Furyk called a two stroke penalty on himself which gave the tournament to Furyk. These two stories are far more positive than Tiger’s return to golf.

  With everyone having to do a bit more with a little less because of cutbacks associated with the current economic crisis, one cut the NFL missed occurred to me while watching Sunday’s football games--give all of the kickers the boot. By eliminating this position, the NFL could save a few bucks and the game would be better for it.

Have you ever had one of those days when you realize that, regardless of the amount of years you have lived and things you have seen, you are seeing something that tops all you have witnessed before in high school athletics. Friday at the Cloquet vs. Ashland High School football game was one of those days for me.

Such is the case in the collegiate hockey landscape as the Western Collegiate Hockey Association and the Central Collegiate Hockey Association will both look a whole lot different in the near future.

  As a longtime sports observer and reporter in the Northland I have seen a lot of great teams and dynasties. What has been a constant for all of those runs of success has been the work of so many people in the particular town that is enjoying the fruits of their labor. Right now the spotlight is on Barnum and an incredible run of success by Barnum girls athletics.
