  As a longtime sports observer and reporter in the Northland I have seen a lot of great teams and dynasties. What has been a constant for all of those runs of success has been the work of so many people in the particular town that is enjoying the fruits of their labor. Right now the spotlight is on Barnum and an incredible run of success by Barnum girls athletics.

Minnesota Breakdown USA has named Randy Myhre as their 2010 Girls basketball coach of the year. They also gave recognition to eight coaches in different classes this year as well.

  MINNEAPOLIS - A statement that Katrina Newman made Saturday afternoon to Northland Sports Online, “It’s a dream come true,” captured the euphoria the Barnum Lady Bombers felt as they defeated the Wildcats of Goodhue to capture their first ever girls basketball championship. The Bombers took care of the Wildcats and went on to win by a score of 43-31.

  A recent Barnum star athlete who has been battling cancer has passed away. Stuart McCoy, who was the subject of numerous news stories this past year regarding his cancer, died on Tuesday at Solvay Hospice House at the age of 18.

  ST. CLOUD- Katrina Newman was so focused on Wednesday it was hard to realize that she was heading to UMD next year to play basketball instead of softball. Yet, she pitched one of the most memorable games of her softball career to lead the Bombers in to the section championship game Thursday afternoon. The Bombers defeated Osakis by a score of 6-0 behind some early timely hitting and a dominating pitching performance from Katrina Newman.

  BARNUM- The Barnum Bombers captured the Polar League girls softball conference championship Thursday afternoon with a 5-1 victory over the Silver Bay Mariners at home. The win completes a sweep for the Bombers, who won the conference championship in volleyball last fall, the basketball title in the winter and now a softball championship in the spring.  After capturing the softball conference title, the Bombers completed the first sweep in 32 years.

  BARNUM- The Barnum Bomber softball team won a pair of games Monday afternoon, still remaining perfect on the season. The Bombers beat the AlBrook Falcons 2-1 in the opening game, and then shot down the Moose Lake-Willow River Rebels 10-1 in a make-up game from last Friday.
