  HERMANTOWN - Usually hitting a buzzer beater shot as the clock runs out is what it takes to win a close game. Against Crosby-Ironton on Saturday, Hermantown needed two such shots. Fortunately for the Hawks, Kole Zuidmulder was able to produce two such shots, one at the end of the half and another as time wound down in regulation to help give Hermantown a thrilling one point 65-64 win over the Rangers.

  For the Yellowjacket women's basketball team, the 2011-12 season has been all about steady progress, taking steps forward. On Wednesday afternoon at UW-Oshkosh, head coach Don Mulhern's team bypassed the steps entirely and moved forward with a leap. Four players scored in double figures and the balanced attack put up 37 points in each half, as the Yellowjackets made history with a 74-66 win at the Kolf Sports Center.

On Thursday night the Hermantown Hawks killed all six penalties by blocking shots, digging hard along the walls and basically suffocating Duluth Marshall. That effort, along with some timely scoring, gave the #3 ranked Hawks a 5-1 win over #5 Duluth Marshall.

  Denfeld goaltender Zach Thompson did his best to keep his team in the game against the high-flying Hermantown Hawks on Thursday night. Thompson made 15 saves on 16 shots in the opening period and the Hunters trailed just 1-0, but Hermantown proved once again that they are the cream of the Class A crop in northern Minnesota as they picked up an impressive 5-2 win.
