  CARLTON- On paper it looked as the Carlton Bulldogs were huge underdogs against the Moose Lake-Willow River Rebels Friday night. When the Bulldogs top offensive player fouled out early in the second half, many thought the Rebels would blow away Carlton. But the Bulldogs held strong and battled until the end as the Rebels picked up the conference victory by a score of 62-48.

  Josh Cisar had a game for the ages in Moose Lake Area's 13-5 win over North Branch on Saturday. Cisar broke and tied several Minnesota State High School League records by scoring eight goals in one game.

  WILLOW RIVER - Jackson Lindquist has accomplished a lot in his time on the Esko boys basketball team including scoring his 1000th point earlier this year. One thing Lindquist had never done in his time on the varsity team was beat the Moose Lake-Willow River Rebels. That all changed Saturday night in Willow River when he hit a jump shot with four seconds left in regulation to give the Eskomos a 61-59 win.

  For the Yellowjacket women's basketball team, the 2011-12 season has been all about steady progress, taking steps forward. On Wednesday afternoon at UW-Oshkosh, head coach Don Mulhern's team bypassed the steps entirely and moved forward with a leap. Four players scored in double figures and the balanced attack put up 37 points in each half, as the Yellowjackets made history with a 74-66 win at the Kolf Sports Center.

  After losing by just one point in the semi-finals of the Hibbing Holiday Tournament, the Moose Lake-Willow River girls basketball team bounced back to beat Eveleth-Gilbert 67-62 in the third place game.

  WILLOW RIVER- Taylor Mattison who was speculated to be out of action until the first of the year made his first start since doctors gave him the ok to play last week. With Mattison back on the floor the Rebels looked and played like a poised team with a lot of confidence as the Rebels knocked off the Wrenshall Wrens in this Polar League contest 74-34 Tuesday night.

  With four minutes gone in the second period the Moose Lake Area Rebel boys hockey team led Northern Lakes by a 6-3 score, but then the unthinkable happened, as the Lightning scored nine unanswered goals to eventually win a wild hockey game in Hallett, Minnesota 13-8.

  In a rematch of last season Section 7AA championship game, it was the Virginia Blue Devils once again prevailing over the Moose Lake-Willow River Rebels by a score 52-49. The Blue Devils who defeated the Rebels last March at UMD made two straight wins over the Rebels in this sectional match up at Virginia High School.

  The Floodwood Polar Bears picked up their second win of the season as the Polar Bears knocked off the Moose Lake-Willow River Rebels Thursday night by a score of 47-36 at Moose Lake High School.

  For the second time in three years the Moose Lake-Willow River Rebels are back in the prep bowl. Behind a 223 yard rushing performance by Jake Disterhaupt, the Rebels defeated Waterville-Elysian-Morristown by a score of 35-14 to advance to the title game for the second time in three years.

  The Moose Lake-Willow River Rebels picked up their 24th win of the season by defeating the Hinckley-Finlayson Jaguars at home by a score of 67-51. The win matches the record for wins in a season, tying the 2005 Rebels team which advanced to the state basketball tournament.

  MOOSE LAKE- Two former students of Moose Lake High School were inducted into the High School wall of fame while the Lady Rebels continued their fine season by defeating the Carlton Bulldogs by a score of 58-50 in a Polar League battle Thursday night in Moose Lake.

  Adri Jusczak pumped in 25 points and the Moose Lake-Willow River girls basketball team slipped by Eveleth-Gilbert 61-49 on Tuesday night.  A big first half, along with Jusczak and her teammates play, helped to propel the Rebels to a 31-16 edge at intermission; a lead that would be too much for the Golden Bears to overcome.

  Both Barnum and Moose Lake-Willow River have been having good years in girls basketball. Through 13 games the Rebels were 10-3, while Barnum was 10-2 through 12 games. On Tuesday night the two schools took to the hard-court in Moose Lake with the Bombers coming through with a convincing 66-39 win over the Rebels.

  The revival of the Moose Lake-Willow River girls basketball program is continue to make nice progress as the Rebels improved their record to 9-3 with an impressive 65-32 trouncing over Hinckley-Finlayson on Tuesday night.

  Moose Lake-Willow River opened play in the Hibbing Holiday Basketball Tournament with an impressive 53-44 win over Nashwauk-Keewatin. The win improved the Rebels record in girls basketball to 7-2, while the loss was only the second of the season for N-K.

  Moose Lake- With the Rebels and the Cardinals tied 28-28 at halftime of the girls Polar League matchup Thursday night in Moose Lake; the Rebels halftime motivation speech was one of inspiration. The Rebels came out in the second half and blew past the Cardinals as they scored 30 points in the first nine minutes of the second half en-route to a 65-48 win Thursday night at home.

  It is said that without a lot of expectations, there isn’t a lot of disappointment and the greater the expectations, the greater the disappointment. Such was the case with the Moose Lake-Willow River football team on Friday. The Rebels came within one game of the lofty goal of winning a state championship; but fell to Caledonia by a score of 27-0. And, although the teams great disappointments were evident, they handled it with the utmost of class and respect for their opponents and displayed what high school sports are, or should be all about.

  The 2011 Prep Bowl will be conducted over two days, Friday, Nov. 25 and Saturday, Nov. 26, at the Metrodome in downtown Minneapolis. The Moose Lake-Willow River Rebels will be making their second trip to the Prep Bowl in three years and look to bring home their first state champinoship.

  ST. CLOUD- Four Years ago it was the Pierz Pioneers that routed the Rebels in the state quarterfinals and advanced to the state semi-finals, but Friday it was the Rebels exacting some revenge as they came from behind to defeat the Pioneers by a score of 26-20 at Huskies Stadium in St. Cloud.

  There have been several boys basketball dynasties in the Polar League over the years and we could well be witnessing the next one in the making. On Friday night the Moose Lake-Willow River Rebels defeated the Cromwell Cardinals by a score of 62-38 to capture the Polar League Crown for the fourth straight season.

  It took an overtime goal by Tyler Cisar, but eventually the Moose Lake Area boys hockey team defeated the WSFLG Blizzard on the road at Grantsburg, Wisconsin on Tuesday night 4-3.
