  CLOQUET, MN – Two Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College Thunder Football team members signed national Letters of Intent today to attend universities and play football at the NCAA Division I level next season. A total of six Thunder Football student athletes who will graduate from Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College this year will continue their collegiate playing careers next season.

  It was a battle of the rush versus the pass Saturday afternoon. And the rush won. University of Minnesota Duluth senior running back Zach Hulce and junior quarterback Chase Vogler each ran for a pair of touchdowns to lead the ground-happy Bulldogs to 30-27 overtime victory over Saginaw Valley State University in the opening round of the NCAA II playoffs at Malosky Stadium.

  The University of Minnesota Duluth will begin defense of its NCAA Division II championship this Saturday afternoon with a first-ever clash against Saginaw Valley State University at James S. Malosky Stadium.  This marks the fourth year in row the Bulldogs have advanced to NCAA II postseason play, but the first time they've not received a first-round bye.

  ST. CLOUD- Four Years ago it was the Pierz Pioneers that routed the Rebels in the state quarterfinals and advanced to the state semi-finals, but Friday it was the Rebels exacting some revenge as they came from behind to defeat the Pioneers by a score of 26-20 at Huskies Stadium in St. Cloud.

Despite the nearly constant pouring rain, athletes from Cloquet, Hermantown, and Proctor as well as several other local schools participated in the annual UMD high school football camp at Malosky Stadium. More than 950 area athletes attend the camp each year.

  The Barnum Bombers second state football appearance ended Saturday afternoon on the campus of St. Cloud State University as the Eagles of Minneota defeated the Bombers by a final margin of 45-6. The Bombers making only their second ever state football appearance fell to the defending state champions in the snow, wind and rain on Saturday afternoon.

  A lot of different words have been used to describe Friday’s football game between Esko and Deer River, which the Eskomos won 63-49. The words Thrilling, Exciting, and Breathtaking, were tossed around just to name a few. Now you can add one more descriptive word to that list, record setting. The record for most points scored by both teams was broken and another was tied.

  For the second time in three years the Moose Lake-Willow River Rebels are back in the prep bowl. Behind a 223 yard rushing performance by Jake Disterhaupt, the Rebels defeated Waterville-Elysian-Morristown by a score of 35-14 to advance to the title game for the second time in three years.

  Jeremy Peterson of Hermantown and Derek Schofield of Proctor lead the All-Conference Selections for the 2011 football season. Senior halfback Peterson for the Hawks was named the co-conference player of the year along with Jordan Peratalo from Greenway-Nashwauk-Keewatin.

  The St. Scholastica football team will face third-ranked University of St. Thomas in it’s first-ever NCAA Playoff game next Saturday at O'Shaughnessy Stadium; it was announced on Sunday night.  The Saints are in their fourth year as a program and just completed a perfect 10-0 regular season, capturing the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference's (UMAC) first automatic qualifier.

  MINNEAPOLIS- When the Cromwell-Wright Cardinals entered the Metrodome Saturday morning, the Cardinals knew they were going to look for senior quarterback Jordan Suhonen to be the on-field leader for the Cards. Coming off a five touchdown performance in the state quarterfinals win over Mountain Iron-Buhl last Saturday in Duluth, once again he provided the highlights as the Cardinals defeated the Underwood Rockets by a final score of 18-12.

  An old sports line is it isn’t fair to ask for wins, you ask for effort and accept the results that effort produces. Such was the case with the Moose Lake-Willow River Rebels on Friday night in the quarterfinal round of the Minnesota Class AA state tournament. Although they played hard throughout, the end result was a 21-6 loss to Eden Valley-Watkins.

  MCGREGOR – The line often heard from coaches and players is that we need to turn our season around. A lot of time it is just something to say amidst a long losing streak. Not so with the Cromwell Cardinals. The Cards started the season 2-4 and faced their final two regular season games as well as all playoff games on the road. Since that point Cromwell has reeled off four straight victories, the latest of which being a 21-0 shutout over #1 seed McGregor. With the victory Cromwell captured the Section 5 9-man championship, sending them to the state tournament for a second straight season.

Minneapolis- In what would best be described as an unbelievable dream the Cromwell-Wright Cardinals overcame a 2-4 start to the regular season and ran the table as the Cardinals captured their fourth state 9-Man Football title Friday. The Cardinals knocked off the Burros of Lanesboro 49-42. Cromwell-Wright and their senior quarterback Jordan Suhonen set four and tied a fifth prep bowl record Friday in the seven point victory.
