  CARLTON- The Carlton Bulldogs opened up their 2010 football season with high hopes and expectations under the direction of first year head coach Dennis Korman. The Bulldogs started strong but ended up falling to the Jaguars of Hinckley-Finlayson Friday night by a final score of 18-14.

  Midway through the 4th quarter of the opening game of the season things looked good for the Cloquet Lumberjack football team.  Just minutes later, the Jacks found themselves on the short end of a 20-19 score, and instead of a victory, they were trying to figure out what happened in their first loss of the season.

  At times it must have felt like the Mesabi East Giants were in the middle of Hurricane Earl during their Thursday night football game against Moose Lake-Willow River. The Rebels pounded out 10-touchdowns much like the anticipation of Earl on the east coast later today and over the weekend as ML-WR stormed to a 75-0 victory at home in Willow River.

  Fans of the AlBrook/Cotton football team will have a whole new era ushered in as Dan DuPay takes over the reins as head coach after the retirement of longtime Falcon coach Larry Anderson. DuPay, who played high school football at Hermantown, also played college football at Valley City State University in North Dakota.

  MINNEAPOLIS - In Fridays Class AA Minnesota State Prep Bowl, the Moose Lake–Willow River Rebels fell to Waterville–Elysian–Morristown by a score of 33 -22. W-E-M defeated the number one and number two ranked teams in the state as well as the number three ranked Rebels en-route to winning the 2009 state title. The Rebels finish their season with a school record of 13 wins and only one loss, while advancing to the prep bowl for the first time in school history.

  MINNEAPOLIS - The Luverne Cardinals were seeking to make it back to the Class AA state championship game for the fourth straight season, but it was the Rebels of Moose Lake-Willow River who would advance for the first time in school history. The Rebels defeated the Cardinals 27-21 Friday night at Mall of America Field, better known as the Metrodome.

FARGO N.D. – Moose Lake – Willow River and Hawley met Thursday evening in the Fargodome in Fargo North Dakota for a quarterfinal match-up in the Minnesota State Class AA Football Tournament. In a game that could be compared in most every way to a boxing match between two veteran heavyweights, both matched the other blow-for-blow until the final play of the game in which Rajean Carlson scored on a 1 yard touchdown run in overtime to give the Rebels a 41-35 victory.

  The Moose Lake-Willow River Rebels are looking to make a run in this year’s state football Class AA tournament. The Section 7AA Rebel champions will square off on Thursday at 6:00 pm at the Fargodome in Fargo, North Dakota against the Hawley Nuggets. The Rebels enter the game with an 11-0 record, whereas Hawley comes in at 10-1 overall.

  DULUTH - The Moose Lake-Willow River Rebels were looking to advance to the state football tournament for the fourth consecutive year going into the section final game. They did just that when they stomped the Tigers of Rush City by a final score of 42-24. The Rebels high power offense ran wild against the Tigers, amassing 468 yards of total offense, complete with 408 yards rushing on the evening.

The Rebels will make their sixth straight trip to the finals onThursday, looking for their fourth consecutive title after defeating Braham 40-0 in the section semi-finals.

  Cloquet's three sport athlete, Jerahvenne RaRa Jones, has signed his national letter of intent to play football for St. Cloud State University. The Cloquet senior has signed to say that he will be a part of the Huskies football team beginning next August. RaRa chose the Huskies over Minnesota State University in Mankato.

  Jordan Suhonen had been the leader of the Cromwell Cardinal offense all season. His quiet but effective role as a leader of this State Tournament team ended at midfield Friday night late in the second quarter with a broken leg. Suhonen, the team’s leading rusher and passer went down after an 11 yard run which gave the Cardinals a first down at the Ada-Borup 49 yard line.

  CROMWELL - The Cromwell Cardinals and the AlBrook Falcons met Saturday night in what should have been a tight Section 5 nine man football contest. However, the Cardinals easily persevered in dominating the Falcons to win the semi-final game 62-0.
