  Former Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College women's volleyball coach, Mike Patenaude, has been hired as an assistant volleyball coach at the University of Wisconsin-Superior and will join the Yellowjackets staff this school year.

  Longtime Northland volleyball club coach Mike Patenaude was recently named the recipient of the 2010 Robert L. Lindsay Meritorious Award. The Lindsay Award is given annually in appreciation of members of USA Volleyball that demonstrate outstanding service and commitment to furthering and enhancing the game of volleyball.

  Sheenagh Caroline of Moose Lake has made a commitment to attend the University of Minnesota-Duluth to play volleyball for the nationally ranked Bulldogs. As a junior in high school, Caroline will have one more year of playing for the Rebels of Moose Lake-Willow River before moving on to play at the Division II college level for UMD.

  Northland Volleyball Club’s Juniors teams participated in the “Head of the Lakes” tournament last weekend at various locations throughout the Northland. The Head of the Lakes tournament is hosted by East End Volleyball and is one of the premier junior’s tournaments of the season.

  The Bloom family legacy at Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota will continue for at least four more years. Katie Bloom, who will graduate from Carlton High School this spring, has signed a National Letter of Intent to play volleyball with the Wolves next season.

  Former Fond du Lac Thunder head volleyball coach Mike Patenaude has another season of Junior Olympic Volleyball off to a fantastic start. Patenaude, one of the founders of the Northland Volleyball Club, has been coaching and playing volleyball for over 30 years in the area. Again, he is using his knowledge and experience to guide several teams of several age levels in Junior Olympic Volleyball.

  Post season awards keep rolling in for Barnum’s Katrina Newman. On Wednesday night the 16th annual state volleyball and state awards banquet was held at the Crown Plaza in St. Paul, Minnesota. Newman was named to the All-State girls Class A volleyball team.

 On Friday, the Barnum Bombers' Katrina Newman was honored for her accomplishments as an outstanding volleyball player in the 2009 season. Newman, a five year player on the team, finished her career with 1137 kills and 668 digs.

  The Barnum Bombers girls volleyball team was hoping to make history this fall by making a state birth to the Minnesota state volleyball tournament. However, that dream ended on Thursday when they fell to Nevis 3-0.

  For the second time in two weeks it was the Deer River Warriors who would come back in a match against the Carlton Bulldogs in girls volleyball as the Warriors ended Carlton’s season in dramatic fashion Wednesday night at Hermantown High School.

The Cloquet volleyball team made huge strides this year. Despite playing with a fairly young roster, the Jacks made it to the Section 7AA semifinals before bowing out last night 3-0 to the always strong Hibbing Bluejackets.

  Cloquet started a bit slow in their volleyball match with Barnum on Thursday night at Cloquet High School, but once the Jacks found their stride they pulled away for a convincing 25-17, 25-9 and 25-21 victory over the Bombers.

The Minnesota North 18-1 Junior Olympic volleyball team will be competing in the 31st annual USA volleyball girls’ Junior National Championships held in Reno, Nevada from June 29th through July 3rd. Team members include several top local volleyball players.

  Northland Volleyball Club hosted the NVC Spring invite at Esko High School this last weekend. Thirty-one teams from all over the Northland participated in 4 different divisions. NVC, who is having their best juniors season on record, dominated the tournament with Gold Division championships in the 18’s, 16’s and 14’s divisions.

  Ten Northland Volleyball Club Junior teams participated in a tournament last weekend sponsored by the North Country Region of USA Volleyball. Seventy-eight teams competed in age groups from 12 and under to 18’s at various locations throughout the Twin Ports.

  GRAND RAPIDS – After turning in what was arguably their best performance of the season, a 3-0 win over Hermantown in the Section 7AA volleyball semi-finals, the Esko Eskomos went into the section finals with high hopes. Those hopes were dashed early when the Hibbing Bluejackets rolled to a 3-0 win Saturday in Grand Rapids.

Twice during the regular season the Hermantown volleyball team defeated the Esko Eskomos in tightly played games. On Wednesday night however, the Eskomos reversed their fortunes by defeating the Hawks 3-0 in the Section 7AA volleyball tournament and ending Hermantown's season.

The Barnum Bombers will be making their first ever appearance in section volleyball semifinals on Thursday night when they face Nevis as part of a double header at Brainerd High School. The Bombers will take on Nevis (22-5) at 6:00 pm. The other semifinal game will feature Bertha-Hewitt, who upset the west half #1 seed Sebeka, and Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa at 7:30 pm.

  AlBrook advanced to the quarter final round in the Section 7A girls volleyball tournament with a convincing win over Silver Bay in Saginaw on Wednesday night. The Falcons advanced by beating the Mariners 25-21, 25-16 and 25-12.

  The Esko volleyball team left little doubt that they are the #1 seed in the North Subsection of Section 7AA on Wednesday night when they drubbed Aitkin 25-12, 25-9 and 25-15 in Esko.

CARLTON - The Carlton Bulldogs made sure things went as planned in the Section 7A volleyball tournament. The Bulldogs tamed the Lakeview Christian Academy Lions 25-6, 25-15 and 25-8 in second round action and they will move on to the quarter finals on Friday at Hermantown when they take on Babbitt-Embarrass.

  The Lake Superior Conference announced its All-Conference team Friday, with athletes from both Hermantown and Cloquet locking up spots on the first team.

The Barnum Bombers girls volleyball team coming off an extended break in their volleyball season downed the Bombers from Braham in a tough four game match. Barnum had not seen action since last Tuesday when they defeated Wrenshall, capturing their first ever Polar League Championship.
