  ST.CLOUD- Head boys baseball coach Rick Stowell knew that Mankato East was a very good team and their overall record shouldn’t be taken for granted. Mankato East came in strong Thursday morning in the opening round game of the State AA boys' baseball tournament to defeat the Lumberjacks 5-2 at Dick Putz Field in St. Cloud.

  DULUTH-Peter LaCourse drove in Corbin Morse with the winning run on a single to centerfield to cap a three-run rally in the bottom of the 8th and take the Sectioln 7AA baseball championship. The Cloquet Lumberjacks soared past the Hermantown Hawks 7-6 at Wade Stadium on Thursday afternoon to bring sectional play to a close.

  HERMANTOWN- Cloquet’s Adam Hanson pitched a gem of a game to defeat Proctor 4-0 and advance the Jacks to the Section 7AA finals Thursday. This sets up a rematch with the Hermantown Hawks who beat the Lumberjacks earlier Wednesday in the section tournament.

  Perhaps the Hermantown baseball team had a lucky charm with them on Thursday afternoon. The Hawks won a thrilling extra inning game against Moose Lake-Willow River in the Section 7AA second round single elimination game. Then, after moving on to the Final Four, they beat Mora in another tight game to remain undefeated entering next Tuesday's play.

  It was a day of mixed results for the Proctor baseball team on Thursday. The Rails opened the day with a Section 7AA second round game and a 9-4 win over Virginia at Wade Stadium. However, by the end of the day, the Rails had fallen 7-2 to Cloquet in the first game of the double-elimination Final Four Tournament.

  Wednesday’s Section 7AA mach-up between the Cloquet Lumberjacks and the Proctor Rails could have been a preview of the upcoming section playoffs. In a seeding process that awards points based on class of your opponent, the Jacks will have the top seed and the Rails can do no worse than the three seed. Today, Proctor rode a big four-run fifth inning to a 9-4 road win.

  Michael Unzen started things off well for the Rebels when he belted a home run in his first at bat in the bottom of the first inning to give them an early 1-0 lead.  The early first inning blow propelled the Rebels to an 11-0 win over the Barnum Bombers.

  The hosting Mora Mustangs jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and never looked back as they beat the Eskomos 5-0 Monday afternoon. The Mustangs scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning and went on to win this non-conference game.

Cloquet Falls In Consolation Semifinals

  MANKATO- When the 2010 boys baseball season started practicing this year, Cloquet boys baseball coach Rick Stowell stated, “On June 19th I’m going to be at Target field watching the state boys baseball championship, and my eye sight isn’t that good so why not just let me watch from the dugout?” Well that dream was nearly achieved here in 2010. However, it came up just short as the Lumberjacks lost in the consolation round on Friday to St. Anthony Village by a score of 8-3.

HERMANTOWN- The Proctor Rails ousted the defending Section 7AA champions Wednesday afternoon at Don Fichtner Field in Hermantown by a final score of 7 -5. Proctor's victory ended Mora’s reign as the two time defending 7AA champions.

  The Moose Lake-Willow River Rebels comeback came up a hair short Thursday afternoon as the Hermantown Hawks ended the Rebels boys' baseball season and advanced in the Section 7AA playoffs. The Hawks defeated the Rebels by a score of 8-7 in nine innings.

  The Cloquet baseball team has advanced to the Section 7AA Final Four! The Jacks pounded out a 5-1 win over International Falls in the second round of the tournament early on Thursday, and then in the first round of Final Four play they defeated Proctor 7-2. The win in Final Four play means that Cloquet, along with Hermantown, are the lone undefeated teams left in sectional play.

  The Moose Lake-Willow River Rebels were seeking to exact some revenge on Esko after last season’s playoff victory.  ML-WR had defeated Esko in the regular season last year, however, the Eskomos then beat the Rebels in the 7AA playoffs. This year, in the regular season, it was a late rally in a game in Esko that propelled the Eskomos to the early season win. However, on Wednesday afternoon it was the Rebels who pounded out 14 hits on their way to a 17-1 win at home.

Silver Bay Walks Past Barnum

  BARNUM-Upon entering Wednesday's game against the Barnum Bombers, Silver Bay came in as winners in five of their last six games. Meanwhile, the Bombers were victorious in only one of their last six, dropping their last five consecutively. All season long Barnum has had issues with giving up or letting the other team have one big inning.  That happened again Wednesday when the Mariners beat them 10-3.

  SAGINAW - It has been said that good hitting and pitching wins baseball games. Judging by their 15-1 record, the AlBrook Falcons appear to have plenty of both this season. The Falcons continued their winning ways at home on Tuesday by beating the Silver Bay Mariners 11-3 on Tuesday.

  It has been a magical ride so far for the AlBrook baseball team this season. The only loss the Falcons have suffered was to highly ranked Ely, and on Monday night AlBrook picked up their 14th win of the season by blanking Two Harbors 3-0.

  MOOSE LAKE- The Moose Lake-Willow River Rebels beat the Pine City Dragons 9-2 on Tuesday to set themselves up for next week. The Rebels will face two Polar League rivals this Saturday and next Tuesday. If both matches are won, their third straight polar league championship is in place.
