Northland Softball Brings Home Two Runners-Up Trophies

  The Northland captured a pair of second place finishes in the Minnesota State Softball Tournament on Friday in Mankato. The Bombers fell to New Life Academy 2-1 while Hermantown was narrowly defeated by Park Center by a score of 2-1.

UWS Softball Announces Incoming Class

  Head Coach Roger Plachta of the University of Wisconsin-Superior Yellow Jackets softball team announced Tuesday his upcoming recruiting class for 2011. He announced six players joining his team next season including four incoming freshman and one transfer. Plachta also announced his captains for next season as well.

Local Stars Named To All-Tournament Team

  MANKATO- With the 2010 girls state softball tournament complete, several members of the two local schools that took part were named to their respective classes’ all-tournament teams. Katrina Newman and Katie Myhre were named from Barnum in Class A. Megan Mullen, Julia Gilbert and Steph Thun from Hermantown were given the honor of being selected to the Class AA all-tournament team.

Bombers Bring Home Second Place Hardware

  MANKATO- One pitch was all the New Life Academy Eagles needed to shut out the Barnum Bombers in the Class A girls' softball championship game. The winning pitch was hit by Eagles' Rebekah Schmidt, who laced it over the left field fence for a two-run home run and the 2-0 victory.

  MANKATO- Hermantown has advanced to the softball state championship game for the second straight season. The Hawks are looking to defend their state title and their fourth state title overall. Hermantown has been the state runners-up twice as well.

  Katrina and Jessica Newman of Barnum, and Megan Mullen, Julia Gilbert and Ellen Folman from Hermantown lead the Minnesota Coaches Girls Softball Association All-State girls softball teams. Katrina Newman, along with her sister Jessica, were named to the Class A All-State teams. Mullen, Folman and Gilbert were named to the Class AA team.

  ST.CLOUD- For the second consecutive day the Barnum Bombers shut out the Silver Streaks from Osakis. The win was aided behind the strong pitching of Katrina Newman, who threw her eighth no-hitter of the season and the fourth of the Section 5A playoffs. The Bombers bested Osakis by a final score of 3-0 and now puts them in the state tournament for the first time since 2002.

  CLOQUET - They've been here before. A year ago the Hermantown girls softball team faced elimination in the Section 7AA softball tournament after losing to Virginia. The Hawks bounced back to win back-to-back games and the Section 7AA title. Less than a week later, the Hawks won the Class AA Minnesota State High School Girls Softball Championship in Mankato. If the Hawks are going to get a chance to defend their state title they will need to win two games against Duluth Central today.

  CLOQUET - When the Section 7AA softball tournament opened its Final Four phase there were few people who believed that Duluth Central would be one of the top teams left standing. Entering the tournament, the Trojans came in as a lower seed, but they have caught fire and on Tuesday they knocked off defending state champion Hermantown 3-2 to advance to the sectional championship game. Meanwhile, Hermantown showed the heart of a champion and rebounded to win two games following their loss and they will face Central in a dramatic showdown on Thursday.

  COHASSET- Hermantown continued on their quest to defend their state Class AA title when, on Thursday afternoon, they rolled over Proctor 11-1 in five innings. The Hawks exploded for five runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back as they cruised into the Section 7AA semifinals at Braun Park in Cloquet.

  COHASSET- Duluth Denfeld entered Thursday’s quarterfinal game against Cloquet with a lot of confidence after beating the Lumberjacks less than one week ago. Last Friday, Denfeld defeated the Lumberjacks 6-2. However, this game was one of pitching and defense. It would be the Hunters who capitalized to come away with the 1-0 win.

  The Carlton Bulldogs opened the Section 7A playoffs with a huge 22-3 win over Cook County Tuesday afternoon at Chub Lake Park in Carlton. The Bulldogs opening round win moves them into quarterfinal action Thursday afternoon in Cloquet.

Hawks Come Within A Run Of Repeat

  MANKATO- Hermantown pitcher Megan Mullen had thoughts of a second state championship to cap off her softball career at Hermantown High School. Mullen was a dominant force for the Hawks for the past several seasons and led them to the state championship in 2009. However, this season it was Park Center that capitalized and came away with a 2-1 win at Caswell Park in North Mankato.

  CLOQUET - The talk among fans prior to the Section 7AA girls softball championship round of games between Hermantown and Duluth Central centered on the importance of Hermantown getting a good start in the first game of the potential doubleheader. If the Hawks managed a good start and put the Trojans on their heels, the feeling was that Hermantown would then rebound to win yet another sectional championship. That is exactly what happened as the Hawks beat Central 8-0 and 3-1 on Thursday afternoon at Braun Park in Cloquet.

  ST. CLOUD- Katrina Newman was so focused on Wednesday it was hard to realize that she was heading to UMD next year to play basketball instead of softball. Yet, she pitched one of the most memorable games of her softball career to lead the Bombers in to the section championship game Thursday afternoon. The Bombers defeated Osakis by a score of 6-0 behind some early timely hitting and a dominating pitching performance from Katrina Newman.

  The Barnum Bombers continued to advance in the Section 5A playoffs by defeating the Braham Bombers 7-0.  Barnum has captured the 5A East sub-section championship and advance to meet Osakis in the double elimination tournament. Osakis defeated Kimball Area on Thursday by a score of 12-4.

  COHASSET- Moose Lake-Willow River first year coach Andrew Miller was excited upon entering the sectional playoff game Tuesday against Duluth Central. The Rebels had won seven of their last ten games and were playing some of the best softball they had so far this season. They were hoping those factors would play into their success on Thursday. However, the Rebels found the road was met with a block by the name of Sarah Hendrickson.

  The Rebels continued their winning ways this softball season, as they downed Cook County on Tuesday by a score of 2-0. The Rebels pick up their sixth win out of seven starts this season. Their only defeat was a loss last week to Rush City.
