Several Northland athletes made impressive showings at the 2010 Minnesota Class A track meet at Hamline University in St. Paul. The meet was highlighted by Esko sophomore Kate Shelerud winning the 800 meter crown with a time of 2:15.59.

  DULUTH - The track dominance of Esko continued into the Section 7A boys and girls meets held on Friday at UMD. The Esko boys won with 103 points and the girls did the same with 148 points. In other words, there wasn't a team close on either side of the ledger for the Eskomos.

  Esko won both the boys and girls division of the Section 7A Southh Subsection track meets held at Malosky Stadium on the campus of UMD on Wednesday. The Eskomo girls garnered 166 points and the boys finished with 143.5 points as they both easily won over their nearest competition.

  The Lake Superior Conference recently named the 2009-2010 all-conference selections for this academic year. Hermantown paced the selections with six events in the girls and five events for the boys. Cloquet had members named in five girls events and Proctor had three named in boys events.

  The tone was set early for both the Esko boys and girls track teams at the Polar League track meet held in Two Harbors on Wednesday afternoon. The Eskomos took first place in both boys and girls and were never truly threatened by other teams throughout the day. Two Harbors and Moose Lake-Willow River finished second and third respectively in both boys and girls divisions.

 The Cloquet girls finished with a first place team finish in the rain shortened Proctor quad track meet on Tuesday. Cloquet finished with 81 points to second place Superior's 69 points.

The Hermantown Hawks Boys' and Girls' track teams captured both the titles this Tuesday at the quad meet in Cloquet. The quad meet featured Hermantown, Cloquet, Proctor, and Duluth Marshall.

  Former Cloquet star athlete Taylor Sautbine was impressive at a recent track meet held at UMD. Sautbine, a freshman at Bemidji State University, won the hurdles while also finishing strong in the 200 meter dash and helping a Beaver relay team to a second place finish.

Track and field season wraps up this weekend with both the “A” and “AA” state tournament meets taking place at Hamline University in St. Paul. Cloquet sent two participants to the event: seniors Taylor Sautbine and Jes Vork.

  Several members of the Cloquet High School track team began their quest Wednesday for a trip to Hamline University to compete in the state track and field meet. The Lumberjacks began preliminary qualifying for Section 7AA competition on a bitterly cold day at Griggs Field located on the campus of the University of Minnesota Duluth.

The Cloquet track team participated in the Lake Superior Conference championships at Public School Stadium with the girls’ team taking home top honors for the second consecutive year while the boys finished sixth. The girls were led by seniors Jes Vork and Taylor Sautbine; however, the win was a total team effort with multiple girls scoring well in all events.

ST. PAUL - The single "A" portion of the state track and field meet got underway Friday afternoon at Hamline University in St. Paul with 661 athletes competing. Several schools from the Northland were well represented with Esko heading the list, entering a total of 24 athletes.

  Paul Nisius, the head coach of the Yellowjacket cross country and track and field teams, has resigned his position at UW-Superior to accept the head men's track and field coach position at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. Nisius' final day at UW-Superior will be Friday, August 13.

 On May 14th Cloquet held a different kind of track meet-- the “Relay Meet.” During this unprecedented competition, kids were able to try new events never heard of before.  Cloquet, Esko, Moose Lake-Willow River, Two Harbors, and Proctor track teams participated in this meet.

  CLOQUET - If there was an individual super star at the Lake Superior Conference track meet in Cloquet on Thursday it was Paige Stratioti of Denfeld, who won four events in the meet. Superior took first in  the boys and girls events to capure both Lake Superior Conference titles.

An unusual occurrence is scheduled to take place Friday, May 7 at the Cloquet High School track. One could argue that an outdoor track meet in early May is odd by itself. However, this Friday Cloquet will host something even more unheard of: its first ever relay meet.

  The Cloquet Lumberjack girl’s track team finished ahead of the Proctor Rails to win the four team event at Cloquet High School Tuesday afternoon. The Lady Lumberjacks finished first with 89.5 points, second were the Rails with 76.5, Duluth Denfeld finished third with 67 points and Ashland was fourth with 33.

The tentacles of former Northland Sports Online athletes spread across the country like the arms of an octopus. Among those former athletes from the area seeing success was 2008 Cloquet High School graduate Becca Sorenson, who was a freshman last season at Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana.

The Barnum Bomber boys and girls track teams have been having a good season so far this spring. Kurt Ziebarth and Patty Jerde, the girls and boys track coaches, have been impressed with how their teams and individuals have been performing.

Former Barnum Bomber athlete Jenna Halverson took part in a record-breaking event for the University of Wisconsin- Superior track team this past weekend. Jenna a junior Yellow jacket is in her third season as part of the UWS track and Filed team. Halverson and three teammates broke the school record in the 4 x 800 meter relay.
