  For the second time in a month, the New Prague boys hockey team has made the trip north to take on the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton Lumberjacks. And for the second time in a month the Jacks came out on the top end of the scoreboard, this time a 3-2 win at Northwoods Credit Union Arena in Cloquet.

  New rules of enforcing boarding penalties came into play in the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton boys hockey win over Denfeld on Thursday night. With the game tied at 1-1 midway through the third period, the Hunters were called for a boarding penalty and the Lumberjacks scored twice during the five-minute major as CEC went on for a 4-2 win.

  Two power play goals late in the third period helped to keep the Hermantown Hawks unbeaten on the season when they defeated Superior 4-3 on Tuesday night at Wessman Arena in Superior. The win was the 16th of the season for Hermantown making the Hawks and Duluth East the two lone remaining unbeaten teams in the state of Minnesota.

  The Minnesota State High School League Board of Directors has approved a recommendation to stiffen several penalties in hockey that become effective immediately.  The goal is to continue the League’s efforts to reduce and remove dangerous contact that has led to severe injuries to players.

  A strong third period helped to propel the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton boys hockey team to a 5-2 win in Cloquet on Thursday night. The Lumberjacks and Spartans were tied at 2-2 entering the final period when CEC erupted for three goals that gave them the home win at Northwoods Credit Union Arena.

  DULUTH - Penalty killing in hockey can show just how determined, gritty and tough a team can be. On Thursday night the Hermantown Hawks killed all six penalties by blocking shots, digging hard along the walls and basically suffocating Duluth Marshall. That effort, along with some timely scoring, gave the #3 ranked Hawks a 5-1 win over #5 Duluth Marshall.

  It was a night of specialty team play on Tuesday night when the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton Lumberjacks beat Virginia-MIB 6-3 in boys hockey on the Iron Range. Of nine goals scored in the game between the two teams there were seven goals scored on specialty teams play.

The #1 ranked Hawks left Cloquet with their undefeated record intact and the satisfaction of overcoming some major adversity in their 2-1 victory over Cloquet-Esko-Carlton.

  The Superior International Junior Hockey League announced Tuesday that Duluth Clydesdales forward Hunter Scott has been named the latest Pizza Hut player of the week award recipient. This edition of the weekly accolades also includes the final two SIJHL games of 2011, which were contested on Dec. 28 and 30.

The Jacks trailed by a pair of goals against the Rangers after one period, but they mounted a comeback and eventually beat Forest Lake 4-3 in overtime at Northwoods Credit Union Arena.

  St. Thomas Academy overcame a slow start and managed to eke out a 5-4 overtime victory over the Hermantown Hawks in the Minnesota State High School Class A Hockey Tournament championship game on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks came out flying, but couldn't hang on to a three goal lead as the Cadets rallied for the victory.
