Hawks Finish Second In State

  ST. PAUL - The magic for the Hermantown Hawks ended with 1:40 remaining in regulation of the Class A State Championship game on Saturday. The Breck School scored when Hermantown attempted to clear a puck away from the side of their net. The puck bounced off the body of Mustang player Mike Morin and found its way into the net for a 2-1 lead which stood up the rest of the way.

Duluth Area Wins ANG All-Stars Hockey Series

  DULUTH - The Duluth Area All-Stars won the overtime mini-game to take the 12th annual ANG All-Star hockey series two games to one over the Iron-Range All-Stars Wednesday evening at the Heritage Center in Duluth.

OT Goal Puts Hermantown In Title Game

  Three times this year the Hermantown Hawks have played games where the opposition has scored a goal at the buzzer to potentially win the game. The first two times, the Hawks were in regular season play and they won those games in overtime. On Friday afternoon, playing in the semi-finals of the Minnesota Class A State Boys Hockey Tournament, the Mahtomedi Zephyrs appeared to have scored at the end of regulation. However, replays showed that the clock had expired just a fraction of a second before the puck crossed the goal line. Instead of a Mahtomedi win, the game went to overtime where the Hawks scored and pulled a win from what appeared to be the jaws of defeat.

Cloquet Bantams To Face Woodbury At State

  It took a whole lot of hard work, but the Cloquet Bantam A boys hockey team finally grabbed an elusive spot in the Minnesota State Bantam Hockey Tournament. Making the achievement even more special was the fact that many of these same players also played on the Pee Wee A team, which advanced a couple of years ago to that state tournament.

  ST. PAUL - In hockey, the ability to kill penalties and to score on the power play can be the difference between being a champion or an also-ran. On Wednesday afternoon, the Hermantown Hawks shut down the Virginia-Mt. Iron-Buhl power play and went on to score on one of their few chances to take a 2-1 win over the Blue Devils in the Minnesota State Class A quarterfinals at the Xcel Energy Center.

  The last time Hermantown and Duluth Denfeld met in boys hockey it took overtime periods for the Hawks to claim victory. Kevin Danielson made sure it didn’t get to that in Friday’s Section 5A matchup against the Hunters. Playing before a capacity crowd at the CARC in Cloquet, Danielson scored with 3:46 remaining in the third period to send the Hawks to the Minnesota Boys High School Hockey Tournament for the second time in four years.

  A dramatic come-back by the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton boys hockey team sent their Section 7AA game into overtime against #1 seeded Elk River on Tuesday night. The end result saw the Jacks fall in double overtime 4-3 in a thrilling road game.

Hermantown Gets Last Second Win Against Hibbing

  The old saying goes “It isn’t over 'til it’s over.” The Hermantown Hawks proved this saying true in Friday’s hockey matchup against Hibbing. Adam Krause scored the last of three goals in the final 1:08 of the game to give the Hawks a 5-4 home win over Hibbing.

  Monday night was a tough one for the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton boys hockey team at the Cloquet Area Recreation Center. The Lumberjacks spent a lot of time on the penalty kill and trying to slow down Forest Lake in an 8-0 loss to the Rangers.

Krause Selected First Overall In USHL Draft

  Hermantown senior Adam Krause was selected first overall Wednesday afternoon in the United States Hockey League draft. Krause, a senior forward who is scheduled to play hockey at UMD this upcoming season, was selected by the Chicago Steel.

Former CEC Standout Vichorek Signs NHL Contract

  CLOQUET - For about a month now various professional hockey teams have been quietly scouting former Cloquet-Esko-Carlton defenseman Taylor Vichorek, who is a freshman at Hamline University in St. Paul. Despite not finding a spot on a Division I roster, the 6'10" 260lb player from Moose Lake has found his way into professional hockey after signing a contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning organization on Wednesday.

CEC Bantams Headed To State Tourney

  It is very rare in boys hockey for a team to make the state tournament at both the PeeWee and Bantam A levels. However, Cloquet made an exception to the rule with a run through the district tournament this past weekend and they are headed south for the state tournament. The State Bantam tournament will be held March 19-21 in Richfield.

State Hockey Tournament Pairings Announced

  The 2010 Minnesota single “A” State High School Boys Hockey Tournament brackets are now complete with Hermantown receiving the #3 seed. Hermantown, ranked #3 in the state, will face a familiar foe in the first round. The Virginia-MIB Bluedevils were awarded the slot opposing the Hawks by virtue of a random draw. The two will face off at 1:00pm on Wednesday at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. Hermantown beat the Bluedevils 4-2 earlier in the year at home on December 22nd.

Two Rivers Announces All-Conference Team

  The Two Rivers conference announced their 2009-2010 all-conference team and the awards just keep coming in for the MLA Rebels.  MLA had a conference-leading five players named to the first team and four named academic all-conference.

Denfeld Tops St. Cloud Cathedral, Moves To Finals

  CLOQUET - The Section 5A semifinal game between Duluth Denfeld and St. Cloud Cathedral was every bit as thrilling as the pre-game billing and hype. The Hunters came in as the #2 seed and the Crusaders as the #3 seed in the section. In the end, the Hunters rode the strong goaltending of freshman goalie Zach Thompson to a thrilling 2-1 victory.

MLA Boys Comeback Comes Up Just Short

  LINDSTROM, MN - After a disastrous first period in their Section 5A boys hockey game against North Branch Tuesday night, the Moose Lake Area Rebels rebounded to play well the rest of the way. Unfortunately, the damage was done and the Rebels comeback ended up a wee bit short in a 6-4 loss, eliminating them from the tournament.

MLA Boys Win Conference For 1st Time In School History

  For the first time in school history, the Moose Lake Area boys hockey team captured a conference championship. The Rebels beat Meadow Creek Christian 7-5 Friday afternoon at the Schwann’s Super Rink in Blaine, clinching the Two Rivers Conference championship.
