TORONTO, Ont. - Amanda Kessel (Madison, Wis.) and Kendall Coyne (Palos Heights, Ill.) each scored, but the U.S. Women's Under-22 Select Team fell to Canada, 7-2 in the final game of the Women's Under-22 Series on August 21.

  CLOQUET - The Cloquet-Esko-Carlton girls hockey program has had a great history of churning out great players, but none of those players have gone on to play for the USA Women's National Under 22 select team. That is until this past week when it was announced that 2008 Cloquet graduate Montana Vichorek was named to the team in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

  Since the inception of the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton girls hockey program there has been only one person at the helm steering the ship as head coach. However, starting next season Dick Bartholdi will no longer be the head coach of the program, following a decision to take it in a different direction within the past two weeks.

  CLOQUET - The fifth annual Fire and Ice All-Star Girl's hockey game was played at the Cloquet Area Recreation Center last night with Team Fire winning 5-2. Although the shots were a bit over what a regular game would be, the game was a hard fought, entertaining, all-out effort type of game rather than an exhibition style all-star event seen at higher levels of competition.

  St. Paul - Making their first ever state tournament appearance, the Proctor-Hermantown-Marshall Mirage had high hopes. A bit of a slow start and a hat trick by Roseville’s Kayla Capistrant dashed those hopes, however. The Mirage fell in opening round action to Roseville by a score of 7-2.

  Today, the Proctor-Hermantown-Marshall girls hockey team discovered that their first round opponent in the 2010 Minnesota Girls High School Hockey Tournament will be the Roseville Raiders.

  Behind two second period goals by Emma Stauber, Proctor-Hermantown-Marshall advanced to the Section 7AA finals for the second straight year by beating the Lightning of Grand Rapids-Greenway 3-2 Saturday afternoon at the Heritage Center in Duluth.

  Proctor-Hermantown-Marshall exploded for three goals in the first and third periods on Thursday night as they rolled to a 6-0 win in the Section 7AA girls hockey playoffs over Cambridge-Isanti.

  The X-Factor in the Section 7AA girls hockey tournament turned out to be Elk River. The Elks gained the #1 seed in the section, which effectively moved Cloquet-Esko-Carlton down to a #4 seed and a first-round game versus Duluth.

  It took a late goal by a senior captain and a tremendous night in the nets from another senior captain, but in the end the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton girls hockey team had just enough to pull out a 1-1 road tie with Bemidji on Friday night. The win brings the Lumberjack Axe back to Cloquet. The Axe is a traveling trophy between the two schools who share the same mascot name. CEC earned the Axe last year with a win and the tie kept the trophy in Cloquet for another season.

  Proctor-Hermantown-Marshall laid claim to being the top local girls hockey team on Saturday with a 4-2 win over the Duluth Northern Stars in the final outdoor hockey game of Hockey Day in Hermantown, Minnesota on Saturday. The Mirage raced to a 3-0 lead and then added an empty net goal at the end of the game to take the victory.

  CLOQUET - It took a ton of leadership and composure, but eventually the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton girls hockey team found a way to fight for a 2-2 tie against a very talented White Bear Lake team on Saturday night.

   UW-Superior Head Women's Hockey Coach Dan Laughlin has announced the 2010-2011 recruit class at a press conference on Tuesday at UWS. Courtney Esse of Cloquet leads the recruiting class of the 2010-2011 for the UWS Yellow Jackets. Also from Minnesota will be Hannah Buchite from Hermantown.

  The season came to an abrupt end for the Proctor-Hermantown-Marshall girls hockey team on Friday with a 4-3 loss to Burnsville in the Minnesota State Class AA Girls High School Hockey Tournament.

  DULUTH - A year ago the Proctor-Hermantown-Marshall girls hockey team felt the sting of a Section 7AA championship loss. On Thursday night, however, the Mirage felt the exhilaration of winning the sectional championship as they defeated Elk River 4-0 behind the shut out goaltending of Anja Morris and the scoring of Emma Stauber.

  It was a bizarre ending to a great game on Thursday night as the Hibbing/Chisholm Blue Jackets defeated Moose Lake Area 3-2 in overtime. The game winning goal in the first round of the Section 7A playoffs was scored on a penalty shot by Maddy Wheelcor after she had also tied the game with a goal late in the second period.

  It is easy to be a gracious winner in sports, but it is extremely difficult to be gracious in defeat. A show of class by Cloquet-Esko-Carlton senior forward Courtney Esse proved to be a tell-all moment of the leadership this senior has provided for her team this season.  The Jacks were bounced from the Section 7AA tournament in the quarterfinal round at home in the Cloquet Area Recreation Center.

  CLOQUET - It was parent’s night for the seniors at Cloquet as the CEC Lumberjacks took on Hibbing/Chisholm in high school girls hockey. The Lumberjacks tossed 38 shots on Blue Jacket goalie Dory Johnson, but only one got past the sophomore as CEC came away with a 1-0 victory.

  Seeding for the upcoming Section 7AA girls hockey playoffs should be interesting again this season. Last year, Cloquet-Esko-Carlton took the #3 seed and ended up winning the section title. After beating Duluth last night it appears as if the Jacks will again end up the #3 seed this season.

The Moose Lake Area girls hockey team got a good look at a very good hockey team on Tuesday night when they fell to Eveleth-Gilbert 5-0.

  Through one period of the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton versus Grand Rapids/Greenway girls hockey game, things were deadlocked in a scoreless tie. However, that all changed early in the second period when Molly Illikainen rammed home a goal to give the Lightning a lead as they marched on to a 4-0 victory over the Jacks.

  A goal with just 18 seconds left in regulation time gave the Grand Rapids/Greenway Lightning a 2-1 win in girls hockey over Proctor-Hermantown-Marshall on Tuesday night as two of the area’s top ladies hockey teams went head-to-head on the ice.

  Proctor-Hermantown-Marshall found out just how good the #1 ranked Class A girls team in the state of Minnesota really is. The Mirage, playing at home in Hermantown, was throttled by the Warroad Warriors 8-0 in a game that went into running time. In fact, Warroad outshot the Mirage 39-16 in picking up the road win.
